Session 5: Mana Wāhine and Mana Tāne Approaches to Community-based Leadership

Returning from the 2025 series, Kaye-Maree Dunn picks up the kōrero and goes deeper, looking at different leadership styles from an Atua Māori lens and then exploring what that looks like in real time living on PukeAute Papakāinga.

Drawing on her work supporting emerging Māori leaders through Ka Eke Poutama, living on PukeAute Papakāinga and related governance programmes, she brings a practitioner's honesty to questions that often stay unasked in leadership spaces. What does it actually look like to lead today with one eye on the ancestors and the other on the next generation? And, what gets in the way?

This session moves between reflection and real talk. Participants will be invited to consider their own leadership whakapapa, who shaped them, who they are shaping now, and why intergenerational leadership is not just a values statement but a structural necessity.

Participants will explore:

  • How tūpuna leadership principles translate into daily organisational practice

  • What genuine intergenerational investment looks like beyond a succession plan on paper

  • Practical tools to assess where your organisation sits on the development continuum

  • Peer discussion on the leadership challenges most present right now
