Creating TQ (Tiriti|Treaty Literacy) in Organisational and Workforce Development

In this interactive workshop, renowned Te Tiriti educator Dr Kathie Irwin, will guide participants as they explore the role of Te Tiriti in Aotearoatanga (nation building). Through hands-on, practical exercises, and group discussions, participants will build their TQ (Tiriti literacy) and learn how to embed Te Tiriti into their work, team and wider organisation.

The full day, in-person workshop has been developed by Dr Kathie Irwin for the social services sector and builds on many years of bringing Te Tiriti workshops to kaimahi in the government, NGO and private sector.

The workshop is particularly useful for leaders wanting to build Te Tiriti capability across their organisation or teams who want to move to a more Te Tiriti-focused way of working together. The kaupapa of this workshop is strongly aligned with the vision, mission and values of Te Pai Ora SSPA.

What past participants have said

“I found the workshop really useful in terms of the korero and the learnings but also the practical tools that I have already been able to implement in our work to becoming treaty aligned. Dr Kathie's mahi is not just inspiring but also incredibly helpful.”

“It was an absolute honour to journey alongside all in the room as Dr Kathie Irwin engaged with us and facilitated a really powerful, thought-provoking and practical training.”

“As a Kaiarahi working in the space it is inspiring to come to these wananga and not just learn new things but also revitalize our own kaupapa in our personal workspace. The cultural tax is real, but these days help to refill my kite. Anei he mihi maahana Kia koutou mo o koutou mahi mo te kaupapa TQ. Miharo.”

“My feedback at the end of the presentation was one of gratitude to Kathie Irwin for bringing to the hui her wealth of experience and for making the hui a safe place to express and explore our feelings and for increasing understanding and planned approaches.”

What to expect

“Throughout this workshop we will consider Te Tiriti as a roadmap for the journey of our nation. How does it help us to understand not only where we’ve been, but where we’re going?

We’ll look at Te Tiriti as a blueprint. What are the key messages in Te Tiriti that help us make sense of our organisation, how we work and how we move forward?

And then we’ll look at Te Tiriti as a compass. How does it guide our future as the creative Aotearoa that brings together the best of each world view without compromising the other.”

– Dr Kathie Irwin

The workshop takes an ‘E tipu, e rea,’ dual-worldview approach to the learning and teaching styles it draws from during the day.

Participants will be engaged in both Māori and Western learning and teaching models and techniques. Māori models will include the use of mihimihi, huri rauna, ako, tuakana/teina, pūrakau, mātauranga Māori, and wānanga. Other learning and teaching techniques include facilitation, small group discussion, critical analysis, reflection, and reporting back.

As an in-person workshop, there is a focus on creating empowering learning for all. The aim is to come together to learn, to grow, and to flourish.

The workshop will:

  • take a kaupapa Māori approach, focusing on better outcomes of service
  • be informed by mātauranga Māori, no culture has a mandate on genius, great strengths-based solutions are designed from Māori knowledge;
  • integrate Te Tirohanga Māori, the Māori Worldview.

Ko Kathie Irwin ahau.

I am a third-generation Māori educationist, a devoted mother and besotted nannie. Public service and social justice are deeply embedded in my bloodlines. My passion inspires me to contribute to nation building, in innovative and creative ways, which are framed by Sir Apirana Ngata's whakatauāki (proverb) "E tipu, e rea". This proverb speaks to the possibilities of Treaty based models of change that create authentic transformation.

As a Māori, feminist, academic I specialized in Māori education, research, and development, for nearly thirty years. I have worked as an academic at Massey (1981 – 1988) and Victoria Universities (1988 – 2001), Christchurch College of Education (2001), the Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust (2002 – 2005), and Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi (2005 – 2008).

My second career has been in senior management and governance, across the NGO, Iwi, and public sectors. I have worked at TPK, the Families Commission, the Human Rights Commission, Barnardo NZ, ACC, the Office of the Children’s Commission and Te Ara Ahunga Ora Retirement Commission. I have held governance roles as Ministerial Nominations from the 1980’s. I served as Ministerial nomination on Council of Te Wānanga o Aotearoa (2013 – 2017). From Dec 2022 to June 2023, I was a member, then Co-Chair of Toi Mai, WDC, and, a Trustee of Te Matarau a Maui, Wellington Regional Economic Development.

I founded Kathie Irwin & Associates on June 15, 2020, and am the CEO and Chief Scientist.
