Abuse in Care
Whanaketia – Through pain and trauma, from darkness to light
Whakairihia ki te tihi o Maungārongo
In July 2024, the Royal Commission released its final report on the abuse and neglect of children, young people, and adults in the care of the State and faith-based institutions in Aotearoa New Zealand between 1950 and 1999.
As a sector, we have a collective role to play in shaping the response to the findings and ensuring that the lessons from the past inform our work moving forward. Te Pai Ora SSPA is committed to supporting providers through this process and the work that lies ahead.
Te Pai Ora SSPA Sector Advisory Group to Eliminate Abuse in Care
Submit an Expression of Interest to join
We are seeking expressions of interest from individuals who would like to be part of an Abuse in Care Sector Advisory Group being established by Te Pai Ora SSPA. This group is a key part of our programme to give effect to the findings and recommendations of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-based Institutions.
This is part of Te Pai Ora SSPA’s ongoing commitment to working alongside the sector to acknowledge harm, support change, and strengthen protections for those in care. We are looking for members with relevant experience, knowledge, and connections - people who reflect the diversity of our sector and can offer a range of perspectives to help guide this important work.
Who can be nominated
We are seeking Advisory Group members who are ideally members of Te Pai Ora SSPA. However, membership is not a pre-requisite. We are also seeking membership from the wider sector including academics and researchers.
Nominees will need to hold knowledge, experience and/or connections about care, abuse in care and practice as it is relevant the recommendations of Whanaketia.
We are wanting membership to represent the sector diversity of types of care and service providers, location, capacity and Kaupapa.
You can nominate yourself, or someone from within the sector you believe has the skills, knowledge or experience to undertake this role.
If you are nominating someone else, you must have first checked with the nominee that they are willing to undertake this role and have the support of their organisation.
Kai and Kōrero: Learning over Lunch | 13 May 2025
Our Sector and the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care
Our May Kai and Kōrero: Learning over Lunch focused on our sector and the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care.
This session provided an opportunity for our sector to share the work already underway in response to Whanaketia – the final report of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-based Institutions. It also served as a chance to identify priorities for the years ahead, and to explore how Te Pai Ora SSPA can support the sector’s ongoing response. Check out a summary of the session below.
